Huy in Timor-Leste being assisted up a cliff side to visit people with disability in remote communities. HUY NGUYEN (CEO, Enable Development), 2014 ACT Young Australian of the Year, is a humanitarian engineer, social entrepreneur, traveler and portrait artist. He was born in Vietnam and contracted polio when he was 18 months old. At age 6 his parents brought him to Canberra, Australia to be reunited with the rest his family for a better chance at life.

Huy found his passion for international development work, particularly addressing the challenges of minority groups such as people with disability. Huy has been involved in numerous development projects such as inclusive water, sanitation and hygiene for people with a disability in developing countries including Timor-Leste and development of a wheelchair basketball program in Solomon Islands.

His own physical challenges have given him a unique mindset when approaching real world engineering problems, enabling him to address them on a more personal and empathetic level. Huy’s work to date has been awarded 2014 ACT Young Australian of the Year, a Pride of Australia Medal in the Fair Go Category, the Emerging Leader Award at National Disability Awards, an ACT Chief Minister’s Inclusion Award for Emerging Leader and is a 2014 ANU Young Alumnus of the Year.
